An Invitation Into Essence

An Invitation Into Essence

A reflection on impermanence, identity, and the quiet legacy of lived truth.

When I was very young, I wanted to be noticed. Later, I wanted to be famous. In my thirties and forties, I wanted to make an impact. In my fifties, I wanted to leave a legacy. I flirted with all of these desires, yet life quietly, and at times brutally, revealed to me the power of impermanence.

Over time, I began to see that very few names endure. Recognition fades. Accomplishments are eventually forgotten. Even those who once seemed unforgettable become stories held only by history or a few. What remains is something astonishingly different.

It is not the person who is remembered, but the truth they embodied. The humility they lived. The steadiness they offered. The integrity they never had to announce. The quiet way they revealed, simply by living, that a meaningful life does not require an audience.

I have come to understand that the self seeks to be remembered, while truth only asks to be lived. Depth endures. Integrity endures. Presence endures. So now, all I seek is what is real, real enough that the part of me that does not depend on being seen can live fully and happily.

And if anything is to remain after I am gone, let it not be the memory of the wife, mother, grandmother, coach, or teacher. Let it be the truth of my teachings, quietly continuing in the hearts and lives of others. A pure essence that moves beyond physical life.
